Sanitary Disposal Legislation
Sanitary disposal is governed by the following legislation:
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulation 1992, Regulation 21
The Water Industries Act 1991
The Duty of Care Regulations 1991
According to this legislation, offensive waste is waste that contains bodily fluids, secretions or excretions but is not classed as clinical waste.
The regulations state that this waste should be carefully handled to avoid harm, but it does not need to be treated in the same way as clinical or hazardous materials.
Does your Workplace Need Sanitary Bins?
All businesses, regardless of their size, should adhere to these regulations for the long-term welfare of their employees, visitors, and customers. Therefore, every business or workplace (including public buildings) should have adequate provision for the disposal of sanitary waste.
The sanitary bins should be placed in readily available places: namely in gender neutral, accessible, and female toilets so that they can be easily found by those people who need them.
Sanitary waste can cause harm to sewers and drains and should not be flushed: it can have serious impacts on the environment as they will eventually pollute water systems and beaches, making up fatbergs and plastic ‘islands’ in the sea. This is another reason why it is crucial that they are disposed of properly.
A lack of sanitary bins means that people will have no other choice but to flush their sanitary products – which could result in costly repairs.
Sanitary Waste Disposal in the Workplace
As well as providing these necessities, sanitary waste should be managed to the point of disposal by a licenced carrier. These carriers are legally licenced to remove and dispose of sanitary waste. They will keep an audit trail of documents that should always be available to be viewed. Failure to comply with this legislation could risk fines or imprisonment.
Sanitary bins should be sanitised, cleaned and serviced on a regular basis – either monthly or bi-weekly. If bins are used more regularly, they should be emptied more regularly, in order to maintain hygienic and safe bathrooms.
How Do you Know How Much Toilet Paper you Need?
Keeping a record of toilet paper use in your washrooms is perhaps the easiest and most effective way to monitor how much is used, and identify the days and times when toilet paper is most likely to run low.
Your washroom managers could make a note of when toilet tissue is restocked in the washroom, and after just a few weeks, it may be possible to identify key points during the week when a higher volume of toilet tissue is regularly required, and ensure that sufficient toilet paper supplies are purchased to meet those needs.
Hand Dryers Vs Paper Towels
Hot air hand dryers were previously the hand drying method of choice for environmentally conscious customers, however, the COVID-19 pandemic has paved the way for new hygiene standards, where our old hygiene norms are no longer good enough.
Keeping your hands clean is one of the most important steps that can be taken to avoid the spread of coronavirus and other deadly diseases, and is a method strongly backed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). However, hand washing alone is not an effective measure for the removal of an optimum number of microbes, effective drying techniques must be carried out.
It is thought that a common washroom feature- the electric hand dryer could increase the risk of transmission of coronavirus by up to ten times.
The risk comes from a person not properly washing their hands vigorously enough before using the dryer.
This is because air dryers cause water particles to spray around the room, and if a person has not washed their hands properly, airborne droplets containing COVID-19 particles will easily float around the room and can remain in the air for up to three hours afterwards.
In other words, hot air hand dryers are not the healthiest option and may even contribute to the corona virus's spread.
